Google has spent the last couple of years overhauling its suite of apps. We’ve seen a new design for Google News, a refreshed Calendar app, and a new-look Gmail.

In April, the company revealed the next app that would be given a spruce up: Chrome. It’s something Google needs to get right; Chrome is the world’s most popular browser with about 60 percent of the market share on both desktop and mobile.

The new layout is expected to go live to all users later this year. But if you can’t wait that long, you can easily grab a sneak preview of the design right now. But how? Keep reading to find out more.

How to Unlock the Chrome Redesign Preview

You can see what the Chrome of the future will look like by enabling two Chrome flags. The flags are available on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS. Follow the instructions below to get started.

Note: Previously, you needed to be running the Canary version of Chrome. That is no longer the case.

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser.
  2. Type chrome://flags into the address bar and hit Enter.
  3. In the search bar at the top of the page, type top-chrome-md.
  4. Locate the flag called UI Layout for the browser’s top chrome and select Hybrid from the drop-down menu.
  5. Return to the search bar and type secondary-ui-md.
  6. Find Material Design in the rest of the browser’s native UI and set the drop-down menu to Enabled.
  7. Restart your browser.

Warning: All the flags are experimental. You might encounter unexpected problems when using them.

Of course, the Chrome flags can do far more than merely let you preview the new design. They can even help you speed up your browser.
