TVs are always one of the hottest topics at CES, and the 2020 edition of the world’s large tech tradeshow in Las Vegas is no different.

Not to be outdone by the likes of LG and Vizio, TCL has confirmed that it too will release a bevy of new TVs during the calendar year.

This year’s new TCL products are all about next-gen Vidrian Mini-LED technology. Mini-LED TVs use tens of thousands of individual LEDs to backlight their screens. The screens made their debut a couple of years ago, but are technology is now beginning to gain some serious traction in the consumer market.

TCL’s buzzword for this approach is “Quantum Contrast technology,” also known as QLED. Seen as a direct challenge to the industry’s dominant OLED technology, Mini-LED screens use smaller LEDs than OLED displays. That allows them to be much brighter than their OLED counterparts.

For people who love recreating the movie theater experience in their living room, mini-LED screens are becoming a must-have; the contrast and clarity are the best you’ll find.

All the new Mini-LED screens also boast a brightness in excess of 1,000 nits; that’s almost 50 percent more than comparable OLED models.

The most impressive new TCL TV is the 8K HDR model. It comes with Roku preinstalled and offers circuitry embedded in a glass panel.

But the best news for regular consumers is arguably the introduction of Mini-LED technology to the company’s popular 6-Series models. The models already have full-array backlights and “Quantum Dots,” but the addition of Mini-LED will improve black levels considerably.

TCL has not yet confirmed the price of the new 6-Series models, but the screens have been dropping in price in recent years. If the company can manage to undercut LG’s mid-range OLED models, it could become even more popular.

Lastly, keep an eye out for the new 5-Series screens. They are TCL’s cheapest screens, but will now come with QLED tech for the first time.
