Instagram is rolling out a new feature that will inform you when “You’re all caught up”. And, rather obviously, it’s called “You’re all caught up”. This is an attempt to quell complaints from users still annoyed that they can’t view their Feed in chronological order.
From Chronological to Algorithmic
At launch, Instagram presented posts in chronological order, allowing you to scroll through them until you’d caught up. Then, in April 2016, Instagram switched to using an algorithm to determine the order of posts. Since then, posts have been presented out of order.
Instagram users complained at the time, and have been complaining ever since. However, just like every other social network out there, advertisers are Instagram’s number one priority. And in that context, chronological = bad, algorithm = good.
Congratulations, You’re All Caught Up
However, Instagram has now launched a feature called “You’re All Caught Up”. This inserts a green tick and a message into your feed when, yep, you guessed it, you’re all caught up. Which in this case means you’ve seen all new posts from the past two days.
This obviously doesn’t affect the algorithm in any way, meaning posts will still be shown in your Feed in the order Instagram deems most appropriate. However, you will at least know when you can stop scrolling without fear of missing any recent photos or videos.
Dear @instagram,
Instead of telling me “You’re all caught up,” could you just put my feed in chronological order?
Thanks

Beyond the tick and message will be posts either published more than two days ago or that you’ve already seen and scrolled past. So while it’s only a small change it should at least give fans of chronological ordering some peace of mind.
Algorithms Are Here to Stay
Rather predictably there has been a mixed reaction to this new feature. While some users have welcomed it as being better than nothing, many are pushing Instagram to just bring back the chronological feed already. But Instagram is unlikely to listen to those pleas.
